golden globe nominations 2010

Nominees announced for Golden Globe Awards 2010

Clooney's latest, "Up in the Air," snagged 6 nominations today during the Golden Globe Awards nomination ceremony in Beverly Hills. The film, about a corporate downsizing expert who takes his frequent flier miles very seriously, was nominated for best drama, among others.

The musical "Nine" from director Rob Marshall ("Chicago") earned five nominations, including best musical or comedy and acting nods for stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz and Marion Cotillard.

The films "Julie and Julia," "It's Complicated," "The Hurt Locker," "Inglourious Basterds," "The Hangover," "Avatar" and the indie comedy "(500) Days of Summer" also received multiple nominations.

Typically the Golden Globes are a good indication of what the Oscar nominations are going to look like. But there is something amiss about putting a sudsy, raunchy comedy like "The Hangover" in the same company as critically acclaimed films like "Precious" and "The Hurt Locker." And "Avatar" hasn't even been released and it's getting nominated for an award? I guess James Cameron's boasting is paying off.

I'm not saying the "The Hangover" or "Avatar" shouldn't be recognized for their art, but I don't expect either to land a major Oscar nod; though I'm almost certain "Avatar" will receive a few special effects and technical nominations come Oscar time.

I'm also surprised the Pixar film "Up" only received one award. It's one of Pixar's best films to date and certainly had more weight than some of the other movies up for awards.

The 2010 Golden Globe Awards will be presented Jan. 17 on NBC and will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.
