David Jaffe compares Sony NGP to a vagina... in a good way

David Jaffe has proffered a rather lewd, crude and 'interesting' description of the Sony's NGP (PSP2) - but it looks like he's a fan.

Speaking via Twitter, the God Of War and Twisted Metal creator made his excitement for the console - which Sony announced on Thursday morning - clear from the off.

He said: "I like the NGP from what I have seen of it! I want one!"

However, that wasn't before a rather more bizarre description of why Jaffe's EatSleepPlay studio won't be working on games for the machine just yet. (Warning: Censorship is at play here, but this ain't for kids).

Jaffe wrote: "New hardware is like new p**sy. It's exciting at first but after you've experienced enough fresh vagina over the years - while there's still always a bit of excitement when something new comes along - you learn that sooner than later, the new and exciting becomes the standard and dependable and so it's best to just stay focused and grateful on what you have got at the moment and if you need to make a change, it'll just happen organically."

He added: "And yes, Edge, you can use that quote for your SoundBytes section. I made it JUST FOR YOU! :)"

Not if CVG gets there first, big man.

Jaffe later clarified his gigglesome post by stating that, although EatSleepPlay isn't working on any NGP titles, hes still a fan:

"It wasn't anti-NGP at all. I'm just saying we're grateful Sony is letting us make games for the PS3 and if NGP is in our future, that will rock but it's not something I'm thinking about cause I'm so focused, happy, and [grateful] four the hardware we're currently using."

Jaffe's modern day reworking of Twisted Metal is due for release exclusively on PS3 later this year.

Government, banks to the blame for crisis: FCIC panel

“The captains of finance and the public stewards of our financial system ignored warnings and failed to question, understand, and the manage evolving risks within a system essential to the well-being of the American public,” according to the conclusions of a much-anticipated book released after a one-year examination by the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission.

Throughout the book, criticism focused on government, the banking industry and over-leveraged borrowers — each receiving much of the blame for hardships and difficulties that continue to ripple through the economy.

The book is being delivered to President Barack Obama and Congress and is scheduled to become available on the commission’s internet site and as a paperback and an e-book.

Much of the blame was heaped on the Federal Reserve, with a focus on both current Chairman Ben Bernanke and predecessor Alan Greenspan.

The report argues that the United States. central bank failed to stem the flow of toxic mortgages, which it could have done by setting prudent mortgage-lending standards. It also points out that the Securities and Exchange Commission failed in its responsibility at the time to require that big banks hold enough capital.

The SEC also allowed large financial institutions to become over-leveraged. Christopher Cox, a chairman of the SEC under President George W. Bush, said he was comfortable with the capital cushions at Bear Stearns in March 2008 — days before the troubled investment bank’s collapse and its acquisition by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

“More than 30 years of deregulation and reliance on self-regulation by financial institutions, championed by former Fed chairman Alan Greenspan and others, supported by successive administrations and Congresses, and actively pushed by the powerful financial industry at every turn, had stripped away key safeguards, which could have helped avoid catastrophe,” the report said.

The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission also focused in its report on financial institutions, insisting they made, bought and sold mortgage securities they “never examined, didn't care to examine, or knew to be defective.” It added that large financial institutions relied on “tens of billions of dollars of borrowing” that had to be renewed every night, “secured by subprime mortgage securities.”

Too big to manage

It repeatedly raised concerns that large financial institutions were too big to manage, pointing out examples of interviews with executives at Citigroup Inc.

In multiple examples, the book sought to demonstrate how there was a major failure of risk management at major institutions, noting that one part of a large financial institution did not know what the other part was doing.

In one such case, Susan Mills, a managing director in Citigroup’s securitization unit, noted rising mortgage defaults between 2005 and 2007 and in response the unit slowed down its purchase of loans for securitization, demanding higher-quality mortgages.

Meanwhile, Murray Barnes, a Citigroup risk officer, approved the bank’s collateralized debt obligation desk’s request to temporarily increase its limits on purchasing CDOs — a type of security composed of the riskier portions of mortgage-backed securities. The risk-management division also hiked the CDO desk’s limits for retaining senior tranches from $30 billion to $35 billion in the first half of 2007.

“What is most remarkable about the conflicting strategies employed by the securitization and CDO desks is that their respective risk officers attended the same weekly meetings,” the report said.

The panel blamed a wide variety of individuals, firms and companies, including both the George W. Bush administration and the Barack Obama administration for allowing lax lending standards to borrowers, troubling packaging and selling of subprime-backed mortgage securities, and risky investments on securities backed by the loans.

Jimmy Buffett

Jimmy Buffett hospitalized after the falling off stage

After singing "It's been a lovely cruise, I'm sorry it's ended," Jimmy Buffett fell off the stage at an Australian concert Tues night and was rushed to the hospital with a head injury.

He's reportedly in stable condition in a Sydney hospital.

Officials at the concert at the Hordern Pavilion asked audience members to leave the auditorium as the 64-year-old entertainer lay on the floor in front of the first row of seating waiting for paramedics and an ambulance to arrive. He was taken a hospital half-hour after the fall.

An audience member told the Daily Telegraph of Sydney that it appeared Buffett struck his head and was bleeding as he lay on the floor.

Another audience member in the front row told celebrity website TMZ that Buffett was unconscious for 5 to 10 minutes and that he had a gash on his head. Paramedics arrived 15 minutes later.

Audience member Dan Bateman, 30, told The Daily Telegraph that Buffett fell face first off the stage.

"We were in the 10th row and it looked like he did a massive face plant after his encore and pretty much didn't get up,'' Bateman said.

"We were told to leave the premises. No one really wanted to leave because everyone was anxious to know if he survived the fall. Everyone was pretty horrified.''

Security hustled the audience outside before the ambulance arrived.

Buffett's April 30 show at the Sprint Center sold out in less than an hour Monday morning. There's no word on whether his U.S. tour will be affected. This story will be updated when more information is available.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell Meat Mixture Defended by Company

Taco Bell meat is being defended by the fast-food company after allegations surfaced that most of the product isn't all beef.

On Friday, a class action lawsuit was filed against the company by Montgomery law firm Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles. The lawsuit claims that 65 percent of the Taco Bell meat mixture contains filler is mostly made of filler ingredients such as soy lecithin, autolyzed yeast extract and modified corn starch.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a California resident Amanda Obney. Obney reportedly isn't seeking money- she just wants Taco Bell to publicly reveal it’s ingredients.

An attorney for the law firm said they found the filler products after testing several food items. Attorney Dee Miles said Taco Bell saves money by adding fillers because beef is the most expensive part of their products.

"It's giving them a competitive edge. It is an economic edge" over other companies that sell Mexican-style food, Miles said.

However, Taco Bell said they plan to vehemently defend the claims.

"At Taco Bell, we buy our beef from the same trusted brands you find in the supermarket," Creed said. "We start with 100 percent USDA-inspected beef. Then we simmer it in our proprietary blend of seasonings and spices to give our seasoned beef its signature Taco Bell taste and texture."

Colin Powell

Powell still bullish on Obama, not joining the govt

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is ruling out a return to the government service but says he remains supportive of President Barack Obama.

Powell says he hopes Obama will take on the sluggish economy and unemployment in his State of the Union address.

The retired general and moderate Republican says he is not interested in a job in the Obama administration and wants to stay in private life.

More than 2 years after endorsing Obama's presidential candidacy, Powell acknowledges setbacks and says that the president still has, in his words, "a way to go" in dealing with America's problems.

Powell says that "Superman" was not elected to the White House and but he's confident that today's challenges can be met.

Patricia Krenwinkel

No parole for killer Patricia Krenwinkel who 'became monster' below Charles Manson

The two-member parole panel made clear yesterday it was the horror of the Manson killings, among the most notorious of the twentieth century, that led them to reject the bid for parole in spite of Patricia Krenwinkel's efforts to change her life.

Krenwinkel was convicted - along with Manson and 2 other female followers - of murdering 7 people in 1969, including actress Sharon Tate, the wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski who was 8 1/2 months pregnant.

The decision was handed down after a four-hour hearing and more than an hour of deliberations at which Krenwinkel wept, apologised for her murderous deeds and said she was ashamed of her actions.

Members of victims' families cried and recalled their suffering after the murders and called for her to be kept behind bars.

Krenwinkel, 63, who has been in jail longer than any other woman in California, told the parole board she threw away everything good in herself and became a "monster" after she met Manson.

Krenwinkel admitted during her trial that she chased down and stabbed heiress Abigail Folger at Tate's Los Angeles home on August 9, 1969, and participated in the stabbing deaths of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night. Both homes where the killings took place were defaced with bloody scrawlings.

The parole panel said it had received letters from people around the globe urging that Krenwinkel be kept behind bars.

Steven Tyler

Steve Tyler's a Dog, and the Jennifer Lopez is a Fox

After all the hype about the "new" era of "American Idol," the season premiere of the Season 10 was pretty much just like the season premiere of Season 9.

There were the same weirdos (the guy who burps when he's nervous), the same wannabes (the Britney fanatic), the same sob stories (enter triumph over tragedy here), even the same songs ("Hallelujah" yet again) -- pretty much the same everything.

One major change: These judges "aren't in the business of crushing spirits," as Jennifer Lopez put it. But here's one pleasant surprise -- they were a lot funnier than we thought they would be. Especially Steven Tyler. While the Aerosmith frontman doesn't have Cowell's frosty wit, he is pretty outrageous. His best line of the night, in response to 1 contestant: "Well hellfire, save matches, f--- a duck, and see what happens." What??

He also has something that Cowell didn't have -- he's fun. Tyler's love of music came through again and again, and he often couldn't resist singing along or pounding on the table. Guess that's why he fronted the best-selling American rock band in history.

The "Idol" judging panel also has something else it never had before -- a bona fide sex symbol. Between the hair, the makeup, the clothes and the jewels, you can't take your eyes off of Jennifer Lopez (even if you find her tinny little-girl voice kind of annoying). Even Randy took a peek at her legs, which Tyler was kind enough to point out.

Which brings us to another point about Tyler -- he's a dog. Not "the dog" like Randy -- a "dog," as in a pig. Tyler loves the ladies, and the ladies -- most young enough to be his granddaughters -- love him right back. At 62, he had no problem pointing out that a super-wholesome 16-year-old was showing "just the right amount" of leg.

One major criticism: More so than the judges of yore, this panel seems a little too willing to send the freaks to Hollyweird -- most notably Tiffany Morris, a well-endowed dance teacher who literally let it all hang out while singing about how America needs her for "higher ratings on TV." But Tyler made up for it by addressing the dangling stars on her skimpy bikini top, asking, "What's with the jujubes on your hoo hoo bes?"

As Ryan Seacrest pointed out early in the show, this isn't a story about the judges, it's a story about YOU, America. And of all the 51 contestants who made it through New Jersey, only one really made a lasting impression on us -- 16-year-old Travis of the Bronx. He has the sad back story (grew up surrounded by gangs, drugs and violence, lived in a shelter until recently), looks clean, hip and marketable and did a good, understated job with the Beatles and Jason Mraz.

But we kind of wished Simon were there to point out, "If you're so poor, why do you look like you're wearing designer eyeglasses?"

Alex Lambert

Former 'American Idol' Contestant Alex Lambert Not Homeless, Rep Says

On the eve of the season ten debut of "American Idol," one of last season's most lovable losers has gotten himself back into the news. Perhaps you remember (though probably not) stage-fright-wracked singer Alex Lambert, the talented but nervous guitar strummer whose ouster unleashed an online petition of support from more than 13,000 fans who wanted him reinstated to the show.

Well, on Monday night, Lambert posted a string of tweets in which he claimed he'd been forced to live on the streets of Los Angeles since Oct, when he wrapped up his stint on the reality series "If I Can Dream," the online show he fled to after being booted from "Idol."

After chatting with some fellow fans and former "Idol" pals about his frustrations with the music biz, Lambert dropped this bombshell: "Ever since 'IICD' ended I've been kinda homeless! Sleepin on the street and behind buildings. I have a choice to stay and pursue my career or go back to texas and not do music! I'm usually a strong person but I can't take it anymore. I've been goin to coffee shops and other stores so I can tweet to my snaf! Because to be honest! You guys are all I really have!"

According to Entertainment Weekly, however, things are not nearly as grim as they might seem. A spokesperson for an "Idol" production company, 19 Entertainment, which manages many of the show's contestants, confirmed that the tweets did come from Lambert but denied that the 20-year-old Texas singer is sleeping behind dumpsters.

"He's not homeless. I don't know where that came from," the unidentified rep told EW, explaining that there's good reason to believe that Lambert should have the ability to pay for housing thanks to his development deal with 19. "He's on a retainer, and he's getting money every month," the spokesperson said. "He's working on demos. He's with writers, he's working on music. ... He's not homeless. How could he be texting? How could he be going into the recording studio and sleeping on the streets? There's no record deal yet, but hopefully these demos ... something could come from that."

Perhaps someone at 19 had a chat with Lambert about his down and out in Beverly Hills claims, since he updated his status on Tuesday afternoon, writing, "Sorry for the miscommunication ;) I'm just fine! MAHALO!"

And even though he claimed to be living on the streets, he asked his followers not to feel sorry for him, adding, "I know a lot of people think I tweeted my living situation for publicity! But I don't give a damn about fame!" But then he muddied the waters again with some follow-up tweets in which he stated emphatically, "I'm real! And I don't lie! and I would never lie to y'all! (y'all being my supporters who got my back through thick and thin) F--- yeah I was ... sleepin outside! That sh-- sucks too! I'm goin back home to get my sh-- together! But I will be back! And I'm comin strong.

Vision Airlines

Vision Airlines to fly from the Fort Lauderdale March 25
Discount carrier Vision Airlines announced this week plans to start scheduled service to 20 cities nationwide March 25, including Fort Lauderdale.

Travelers from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport will be able to take advantage of weekly service to the Destin-Fort Walton Beach and Louisville, Ky.

To launch the new service, the Georgia-based airline is offering introductory $49 one-way fares and free companion fares on select flights Tuesday through Jan. 23.

A leading charter operator for 15 years, Vision's foray into the commercial passenger market was a "logical next step," Chief Operating Officer David Meers said Monday

The Fort Lauderdale flights will operate Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, according to the airline's website.

The Destin-Fort Walton Beach route is a one-stop from Fort Lauderdale via Louisville, while the Louisville service is a nonstop.

Other new destinations to be served by Vision from Northwest Florida Regional Airport in Fort Walton Beach include Atlanta, Baton Rouge, La., Little Rock, Ark., and Knoxville, Tenn. The airline will also operate flights to and from Orlando's Sanford airport to select destinations.

The Destin-Fort Walton Beach area, which is considered Florida's second largest drive market, was a big draw for the airline, Meers said.

Vision fares range from $69 to $199 one-way across its system, but most fares are $89, according to a company statement.

Many of the new destinations Vision will serve have been neglected by major carriers with large aircraft for many years, Meers said. And those that do operate flights typically do so with "cramped small regional jets."

"The economic impact our airline is going to have in Florida will be significant," Meers said.

Meers said Vision will operate Boeing 737 aircraft, with 136 or 150 seats on the new routes.

There's no charge for carry-on bags, but checked luggage costs $15 for the first piece and $20 for the second if prepaid online. At the airport, the fees are $25 and $30 respectively, he said.

In December, Vision began service from Niagara Falls International Airport via Destin to Miami International Airport, to capture the Canadian snowbird market.

Meers said there were no immediate plans for service to Palm Beach International Airport.

The Niagara Falls route continues to attract attention from low-fare carriers.

In October, Miramar-based low-cost operator Spirit Airlines announced plans for three weekly nonstop flights to Niagara Falls from Fort Lauderdale starting Jan. 27.

Vision started in 1994 offering sightseeing tours from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon and later branched into charters. It operates charters to Cuba from New York and Miami and also flies trips for private clients, including celebrities and sports teams.

The son of model/actress Stephanie Seymour has hit back at comments made on the touchy-feely beach photos of him and his mom, saying the whole incident has been taken "out of the context".

A number of people expressed their disgust when a series of photos surfaced showing a bikini-clad Seymour, 41, embracing and kissing her teenage son on a beach in St. Barts.

But her son Peter Brant II said in statement released to that there was nothing wrong with being intimate with his mother, as she is very close to all her children and treat them the same way.

"I would just like to say that these pictures have been taken completely out of context, my mother and i are very close as she is with all her children," Fox News quoted the statement as reading.

"She often hugs and kisses me and my siblings in an manner that is intimate, any mother in the world does the same.

"That day on the beach we walked around with each other completely aware of the presence of photographers there. We have nothing to hide and with that in mind I would like to say that I am openly gay.

"At my age my mother and I are almost like friends and I feel open to talk to her about anything (and yes our relationship may be different because of my sexuality)," he stated. (ANI)

Michael Dyer

College football's national champions continue to reside in the Southeastern Conference.

Wes Byrum drilled a 19-yard field goal as time expired to give Auburn a 22-19 win over Oregon, allowing the No.1 Tigers to the finish 14-0. The kick came after Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton and freshman running back Michael Dyer fueled a 73-yard drive that began once the Ducks tied the game on a touchdown and a 2 point conversion.

Dyer made the 2 biggest plays on the winning drive. First he rolled over an Oregon tackler for a 7 yard gain near midfield, stayed on his feet and scooted another 30 yards to the Oregon 23. Dyer ran 16 yards on the next play to put Auburn at the 1.

Auburn was milking a 19-11 lead late in the 4th quarter until Oregon's Casey Matthews knocked the ball from Newton's hands, setting up a 45-yard drive that ended when Darron Thomas threw a shovel pass to LaMichael James for a touchdown. Thomas then hit Jeff Maehl for the tying 2 point conversion with 2:33 left.

Newton and Dyer immediately marched the Tigers down field until Byrum's kick gave Auburn its first national championship since 1957. Dyer finished with 143 yards on 22 carries while helping the Tigers roll up over 500 total yards. Newton ran 22 times for just 64 yards and a near-disastrous fumble, but he also threw for 265 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Thomas finished with 363 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, both to James. However, Oregon scored 30 points below its season average and was shut out by Auburn for over 38 consecutive minutes. James managed just 49 rushing yards, 104 below his season average.

Israel hasn’t Abandoned the Left, the Left has Abandoned Israel

Reading another article in today’s Ha’aretz titled Israel's radical left has given up on taking power I felt compelled to write a comment for the article.

The article talks about the Israeli left’s failure to make a real impact in Israel and dwindling relevance in the Israeli political scene. It reminisces about the 1992 elections, and how Yitzchak Rabin managed to round up the troops and win an election. One in which there was a wide consensus both among Israeli Arabs and Jews that wanted to move the country towards peace. And how after Rabin’s assassination the Israeli left lost its sway.

Plano Isd

Plano ISD investigates child molestation case against teacher.

Michael Adam Zellner, 57, of Dallas was arrested Monday after being accused of the having an improper relationship with a student and of indecency with a child. Plano Independent School District (Plano ISD) officials stated he had been placed on administrative leave with pay, reports the Dallas News.

The probable-cause affidavit stated that Zellner had sent several e-mails and text messages to a former student that contained the phrase “I love you.” Zellner agreed to stop communication with her after being discovered by his wife.

On Dec. 22, however, Zellner’s wife received a text message intended for the girl discussing the upcoming Christmas holiday and with the words “I love you.” She then alerted Plano ISD officials.

The 16-year-old told police that her relationship with Zellner began with mere infatuation, which then progressed to more intimate encounters. What started as a meeting in the library on the weekends quickly evolved into holding hands and kissing by October. By December they began engaging in a sexual relationship. They would sometimes meet in a local park and at least one incident took place in Zellner’s Volkswagen Jetta.

According to police, the girl stated that she was in love with Zellner and considers him her best friend. Plano ISD’s investigation is ongoing.

Zellner worked for the district for 6 years as an English teacher at Shepton High School. His bail was set at $35,000, reports the Dallas News.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in jail.

Unethical Reporting: Ha’aretz Publishes Conjecture and Claims it’s Fact

A shocking article appeared in today’s online version of Ha’aretz daily newspaper regarding the death of a Palestinian woman named Jawaher Abu Ramah titled The IDF uses propaganda like an authoritarian regime. In it, its author Gideon Levy tries to brainwash his readers into believing that unsubstantiated claims made by the Palestinians regarding various aspects of her death, items which are disputed by both sides and have yet to be determined, are actually “definitive facts.”

However, the only definitive fact that appears in this case is the definitive fact that the Palestinian Authority refused to conduct an autopsy or allow Israel to do it to determine the actual cause of death. And without this ability to determine the actual cause of death, there is no way in knowing what happened.

In this groundbreaking piece of corrupt reporting, Mr. Levy through the respectability of Ha’aretz is attempting to make himself an authority on a subject and convince the world that just because he claims these items are definitive facts, and that they are being published by Ha’aretz, that they are.

In the world of ethical reporting, definitive facts are those items which have been checked and verified beyond a shadow of a doubt, items that have concrete proof such as photographs, blood tests and x-rays (witness accounts are not definitive facts, they dependend upon the reliability of the witness), having obtained concrete confirmation of the information being provided.

As a matter of fact, almost every item that Mr. Levy claims as definitive fact is nothing more than conjecture. Mr. Levy Claims that Jawaher Abu Ramah was participating in this demonstration, yet there is no concrete proof like a photograph. Perhaps she was, but this is certainly not a definitive fact. And as we’ve learned many times over in the past, the Palestinians often lie. For example, during operation defensive shield none other than Palestinian minister Saeb Erekat claimed that Israel massacred more than 500 Palestinians in the Jenin refugee camp and buried them in mass graves. This accusation was later refuted by the UN.

Mr. Levy also claims that Jawaher Abu Ramah “inhaled very large quantities of the gas that Israel Defense Forces soldiers fired that day.” This also is also not a definitive fact, but another unsubstantiated claim made by Ha’aretz and its writer Gideon Levy. It is not known if Jawaher Abu Ramah inhaled any gas at all because the Palestinians refused to conduct an autopsy. And if she did, it is not known if that was the cause of death.

So all the while Ha’aretz and Mr. Levy are accusing the Israel Defense forces of making up lies (accusations he makes in his article), they themselves, a media outlet that is supposed to be the banner of ethical, responsible behavior and reporting, are taking unsubstantiated claims and trying to convince the public that they are definitive fact. So while Gideon Levy and Ha’aretz accuse the IDF of “using propaganda like an authoritarian regime,” it seems like a case of the pot calling the kettle black. For after all, what else can you call a situation in which a media mouthpiece claims to be an authority and subsequently tries to convince its readers that something is fact when no definitive proof has been provided?

The Palestinians time and again have been caught in lies used to create anti-Israel propaganda which is then picked up by the media and spread across the world. Yet today is different. Today stands as a watershed moment, one in which a once respectable Israeli media outlet openly declares that it determines facts, and that facts aren’t some objective events that have been verified beyond a shadow of a doubt, but that they are the words of its author and the publication in which they are published that make them fact.Today is the day that Ha’aretz Newspaper completely destroyed its reputation as being a reliable and honest reporter of news and fact. Today is the day that the mouthpiece of the Israeli left wing, those that believe that all people are equal, that transparency is the key to proper working government and society, rob from its very constituency any shred of decency or believability. Today is indeed a sad day for Israeli society.

Gabrielle Giffords

Giffords had history with the Palin, Tea Party

As of Saturday, Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' name appeared on a website titled "take back the 20" as part of a list originally issued by Sarah Palin of the vulnerable House Democrats. A map on the site showed crosshairs over the contested Democratic districts.

Palin 1st posted the list in March 2010, naming 20 House members who voted for health care reform and represented districts that Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona won in the 2008 presidential election.

The post read, "We'll aim for these races and many others. This is just the first salvo in a fight to elect people across the nation who will bring common sense to Washington," and was accompanied by a map with targets over the districts.

At the time, Giffords responded to the map by saying on MSNBC that her long-serving colleagues had "never seen anything like it."

"The thing is, the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district," Giffords said in March. "When people do that, they've got to realize there's consequences to that action."

After Giffords was shot in Tuscon, Arizona, Saturday, Palin responded on her Facebook page:

"My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today's tragic shootings in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice."

At a press conference Saturday, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik criticized people who are making a living off "inflaming the American public."

"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government, the anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," Dupnik said. "Unfortunately, Arizona has become sort of the capital. We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

And Saturday's tragedy was not the first time the Arizona Democrat was targeted. The day after she voted in favor of health care reform, a glass panel at her Tucson office was shattered.

Giffords won a close race against Republican Jesse Kelly in November. Kelly was a Tea Party favorite who ultimately received 47 percent of the vote to Giffords' 49 percent. The Republican-leaning 8th district went for George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004.

Tea Party Express Chairwoman Amy Kremer responded to the events Saturday by saying the group is "shocked and saddened" by the "terrible tragedy."

"These heinous crimes have no place in America, and they are especially grievous when committed against our elected officials. Spirited debate is desirable in our country, but it only should be the clash of ideas," Kremer said in a statement. "An attack on anyone for political purposes, if that was a factor in this shooting, is an attack on the democratic process. We join with everyone in vociferously condemning it."

Selectively Applying International Law Equals Discrimination

For anybody that follows the events in the Middle East, and particularly relating to Israel, whether it be the wars waged by its neighbors and the response of Israel, or the ongoing battle between the Palestinians and Israelis, one thing is certain to stand out: the regularly and reoccurring claims that Israel is breaking international law and must be held accountable.

This subject is raised again and again, whether its through binding UN resolutions which are considered international law that single out Israel's actions in protecting its citizens while ignoring those who Israel is defending against like Hezbollah or Palestinian terrorists, UN institutions like the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), whose members regularly include those countries best known for violating Human Rights like Iran, Libya and Saudi Arabia, or those countries that have enacted laws that grant themselves what is known as the "Right of Universal Jurisdiction," whereby " states claim criminal jurisdiction over persons whose alleged crimes were committed outside the boundaries of the prosecuting state, regardless of nationality, country of residence, or any other relation with the prosecuting country."

Los Lobos

Fillmore Hosts Birthday Bash For The Bill Graham

San Francisco's most venerable rock club gathers such luminaries LA Latin-rock heroes Los Lobos and the local songwriter Jackie Green to pay tribute to the late Bay Area promoter Bill Graham Saturday night, celebrating what would have been Graham's 80th birthday. The party serves as chance for friends and family of this giant in local rock history to get together and remember the pioneering and sometimes prickly figure while raising funds for the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation.

Los Angeles-based band Los Lobos has been igniting stages with an incendiary mix of roots-rock, traditional Latin sounds, soulful grooves and heady experimentation for over 30 years. Drawing equally from rock, Tex-Mex, country, R&B, blues, and traditional Spanish and Mexican folk music, Los Lobos grew from its East LA bar origins to earn a reputation as 1 of the most creative groups to emerge from the '80s.

The quartet of multi-instrumentalists Dave Hidalgo and Louie Perez, guitarist Cesar Rosas and bassist Conrad Lozano first started playing together in 1973. Ten years later, the band recoreded its debut album and grew to a 5 piece with the addition of former Blasters sax man (and future producer of note) Steve Berlin. Critical favorites from the beginning, Los Lobos managed to write great songs in a myriad of musical styles without ever sounding forced.

The outfit achieved its greatest mainstream success with the soundtrack to 'La Bamba' in 1987, but the series of forward-thinking albums released since (particularly the experimental 'Kiko' and 2002's soulful 'Good Morning Aztlan') have cemented Los Lobos' reputation as one of the best bands in America.

The group plays classic cuts and tunes from it's latest album 'Tin Can Trust' when it headlines this concert. Local singer/songwriter Jackie Greene, who is probably best known outside of the Bay Area for his time with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh's band, will also perform a solo set. Area bluegrass outfit Poor Man's Whiskey opens the show. A raffle for great prizes and a silent auction in the Fillmore's upstairs poster room will feature one-of-a-kind items for the annual fundraiser, including a guitar autographed by Los Lobos, signed Fillmore and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass posters and amazing photos from rock lensmen Jay Blakesberg, Ken Friedman and Joel Bernstein.

When Human Rights Organizations have Something to Hide

Transparency.

It’s the backbone of democracy, responsible government and free and open society. It enables all of us to understand a little bit better the driving force behind many of the decisions made that effect our lives.

And yet, more and more so transparency is slowly being purposely eroded in the very institutions in which we need them. In government, and organizations that are supposed to be protecting the rights of individuals, beyond personal bias and politics.

Target Logo

Target Logo Goes Minimal – New Branding Trend?

Being the branding and marketing fanatic that I am, I seem to the always notice intricacies that a normal (sane) person would typically overlook. In this instance, it happens to be the Target logo revision.

I’m not exactly sure when the change took place, but Target has removed text from their logo and is now relying on the good ole’ target icon (bullseye) as captain of the ship. Does this remind you of another logo revision that recently took place? Well, it should.

On January 5th, Starbucks announced a logo revision that, surprisingly, did exactly what Target has done. Text was removed from the logo and the Starbucks “siren” is now featured in all its glory.

When branding in this day and age, is less more? This is an excellent question that deserves input from designers and marketers around the world. Lastly, if you have a chance, check out Target.com and you will see what I mentioned above. Nowhere does it say Target on the header and this is indicative of an established, successful brand.

Salons

Tips to Keep Black Salons in Business

Black Enterprise is giving out pointers to the owners of black hair salons that will help them stay in business in a down economy. The 1st tip is to require stylists to brush up on their skills. They should know how to do natural hair, not just traditional chemical processes and weaves, so that they can service a range of clients. Black salon owners should also offer consultations to clients thinking about transitioning from chemically processed hair to natural hair.

This can aid in getting new clients and giving them information about hair care that they need. The magazine also suggests selling products in the salon that customers are looking for, which offers another income stream. Salon owners need to improve scheduling -- i.e., stop stacking clients. Waiting for hours to get your hair done is the product of a bygone era. Clients expect to be in and out in a reasonable amount of time. Not only is it bad manners and disrespectul of your client's time, but keeping clients waiting

Live To Dance

'Live to Dance' Recap: The Good, The Bad, And The Memorable

Paula Abdul is back at the judges' table on her new show Live to Dance, along with choreographer Travis Payne and the Pussycat Dolls member Kimberly Wyatt. For tonight's premiere, contestants competed to get on the short list for the semi-finals as they make their way to the finale where somebody, or a group of somebodies, will be named America's best dance act. The pot of gold at the end of that rainbow is worth a nice $500,000 and unlike other competitions, there is no age limit so the lucky leprechaun can be 9 or 90.

I generally hate the beginning of talent competitions because they always spend so much time on mediocre or downright awful contestants, but this 1 kept that to a minimum and it was actually quite enjoyable. Of course, that doesn't mean it was all good! Here's a rundown of the good, the bad, and the ... otherwise memorable.

The Good

My favorite act so far is definitely Twitch. They have a really cool style -- somewhat reminiscent of Wade Robson's choreography -- and with all those girls and only 1 guy, they sure do stand out. Am I bothered that they share a name with my SYTYCD husband? Yes, but I'll try not to hold it against them.

83-year-old Bev and 68-year-old Hap were not only adorable, they were also quite good. I don't think they would win this competition, but she can do more push-ups than me and I don't even know how to cartwheel, so who am I to judge?

The Bad

The Solid Gold Dancers got Travis to change his mind and let them on the short list, but they were not that impressive. Kimberly was right, it seemed like they were holding back the whole time. Hopefully they'll be back and really bring it next time.

Of all the nameless dance acts they showed clips of, I was most confused by the clown family or whatever the heck they were supposed to be. Maybe it's just my aversion to clowns, but I'm sure the child on stage with them will have nightmares about that humiliation.

The Memorable

That poor girl who fell on her head and didn't realize she had a huge bump on her forehead had to relive that awful moment on national television tonight. I'm sorry, sweetie!

Jill and Jacob were great dancers and easily made it through to the short list, but that poor boy was so obviously in love with her and she was so obviously not that it was painful to watch.

Philip Markoff

Megan McAllister: How Craigslist Killer’s Fiancee Didn’t Know
Megan McAllister was engaged to Phillip Markoff, having no idea that this seemingly clean-cut guy was the Craigslist Killer.

After watching the Lifetime movie last night, we wonder how she couldn’t know about his crimes.

But, if you stayed tuned after the movie and saw the special “Beyond the The Headlines: Catching the Craigslist Killer,” you saw one of his victims talk about how she had no clue that he was dangerous when she met him, either.

There was an image he presented to the world: a bright, young medical student about to get married. He looked like the boy-next-door. He didn’t look like a criminal and he wasn’t someone that would be on the radar for the police as a possible suspect.

He didn’t give Megan McAllister any reason to think he was anything but that clean-cut guy. She was in love and planning a wedding. There was no reason for her to think anything negative about her fiance.  The bottom line is that he wanted to hide it from her and he succeeded. At least for a while.

The movie and special were a creepy reminder that we might not ever really know someone, even someone who we think we are close to.

Pete Postlethwaite

Pete Postlethwaite: 1946-2011

The great grizzled British character actor Pete Postlethwaite has died, too young to go at the age 64.

Cinema audiences last caught a whiff of his menace in “The Town,” playing The Florist, the aged mobster who set up robberies and sent Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and company off to take the risks while he ran his underworld from the cozy confines of a florist shop.  He was in “Clash of the Titans,” and of course, “Inception,” and earlier, brilliantly,”The Usual Suspects,” “Amistad,” “Hamlet,” a very long list of pretty darned good credits.

There he was in “The Last of the Mohicans,” which I was watching on BluRay just last weekend. He classed up and working classed up many a film, mainly from the UK, from “In the Name of the Father” to “Brassed Off,” a film whose release afforded me the opportunity to catch up with him as he passed through Atlanta, promoting it.

That struck me as a piece particularly close to his heart, a dying brass band conductor for a coal mine band, fighting to keep the group together even as Britain’s coal mines were being shuttered and generations of workers put on the dole. He used the interview to grouse about Thatcherism, the callous destruction of people’s livelihoods, the class war the upper classes were waging, he thought, on the lower classes, under the mantle of British conservatism.

A onetime drama teacher, the product of a middle class upbringing, Postlethwaite went on to a career that earned him an OBE, “Officer of the Order of the British Empire,” which suggests his politics weren’t all that class conscious.

He was nominated for an Oscar for the Irish political prisoner protest drama “In the Name of the Father,” another politically charged piece that he embraced.

He looked old before his time, which is why his age, upon his death, surprised me. But he was damned good at what he did pretty much every time he did it.

Chuck Berry

The Chuck Berry falls ill during Chicago show; but refuses hospital

About an hour into a rapidly-deteriorating concert at the Congress Theater Saturday night, Chuck Berry slumped over an accompanist's keyboard before being helped offstage.

The 84-year-old rock and roll legend and a backing band of 3 Chicago musicians attempted to resume the show for a packed house about 15 minutes later, but Berry almost immediately was taken off again to be checked by paramedics who had been called to the scene.

After being examined, Berry returned one last time to thank the fans who had waited in hopes for the show to continue, but he left the stage -- using a bit of his signature "duck walk" -- without playing again. Shortly afterward, he walked out of the theatre's stage door on his own into an awaiting limousine. Berry signed a release saying he was OK, and he was not taken to a hospital, according to Fire Department spokesman Joe Roccasalva.

"All I know is he felt faint, he felt weak, and I was told to call 911," said Michael Petryshyn, the concert's promoter, backstage after Berry's departure.

Berry had been active in recent days: He had performed 2 shows in New York City the night before. Although Berry performs regularly in his hometown of St. Louis, he infrequently gives concerts elsewhere.A message left with Berry's management Sunday was not returned.

The show had started promisingly. Taking the stage in a red sequined shirt, black slacks and a white sailor hat, Berry began with "Roll Over Beethoven," one of his many 1950s hits, which formed the foundation for guitar-based rock and roll.

Although Berry played this and following songs - "Sweet Little Sixteen" and "School Days" -- at slower tempos than the original recordings, he filled them with his classic guitar riffs and sang them with weathered authority. Drummer Steve Gillis and bassist Bill Stephens kept the songs swinging steadily, and Vijay Tellis-Nayak added jubilant boogie piano.

Things then quickly began going off the rails. Berry played snippets of blues songs and an unsteady version of " Memphis Tennessee," before taking an extended pause to try to retune his guitar, complaining that it was out of key with the piano. He made several unsuccessful attempts at "Let It Rock," in part seated at the piano, and performed disjointed bits of "Carol" and "Johnny B. Goode."

Berry revived to lead the crowd in a sing-along of "My Ding-a-Ling" and acknowledged things weren't going well, telling the crowd he'd try to do better at entertaining them. It was not to be. After a version of "Reelin' and Rockin'" they found the band gamely following his inconsistent tempo, Berry made his way to the piano, where the show came to an end completely at odds with the joy in his music.

"Obviously, something was off," said Petryshyn, the promoter. "Fifteen minutes into the set it went from fine to something wasn't right. He was starting songs mid-song, playing 15 seconds of a song."

"I'm sorry to see his health be in that shape," Tellis-Nayak said. "He obviously loves performing. The music is still there. It's hard to see his health deteriorating. He may be working harder than he should."

Rose Bowl Parade

The Police arrest 72 in Rose Bowl festivities

A total of 72 people were arrested along the Rose Parade route and at the Rose Bowl overnight and today, mostly for alcohol- related offenses, police said.

By the end of today's game between Wisconsin and the Texas Christian, won by TCU 21-19, police had arrested 27 people in and around the Rose Bowl, said Janet Pope Givens of the Pasadena Police Department.

Most of the arrests were for public intoxication, she said.

Another 45 people were arrested along the parade route between 5 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. today, also mostly for public intoxication, she said.

Three people were cited for driving without a driver's license, interfering with a peace officer, misdemeanor assault and urinating in public, she added.

"Fun times on the boulevard, huh?" Givens said.

She said the number of arrests was relatively low, considering the hundreds of thousands of people who attended the parade and football game.
